Two Day Description: Improve your teaching skills with CI-specific classroom management moves. Most have by now discovered the benefits of utilizing CI as the most effective strategy to instill a lifelong love of learning a second language. You’re aware of the benefits, but what does this look like in a productive, controlled classroom? Classroom management is a learned skill. With help, anyone can learn key practical and pragmatic skills needed to manage any classroom in any environment. As a veteran of urban education and having taught in some THE most challenging teaching environments there are, Jon has learned the MOST essential skill that all teachers need in order to have great classroom management. At TCI Maine 2024 Jon will teach those skills with step by step instruction, videos, demonstrations and frameworks. Jon will give second language teachers easy to digest and immediately implementable strategies, guidelines and structures that will surely change the entire climate of a CI classroom. Jon will cover critical pillars that every CI teacher needs to be successful, starting with examining your mindset, to how to invest students, to what to do when you you accidentally blurt out a too-provocative question and all of your students erupt in chaos, screaming out answers in English (we’ve all been there).
By the end of this workshop teachers will be able to improve their classroom management immediately so that learning and JOY can take place. Jon will cover the following topics:
CI 101: Anne Matava (registration limited to 40)
CI 101 is aimed at teachers who have heard about ACTFL's recommendation that 90% of all instruction be comprehensible input and is aware that languages are acquired and not learned via repetitive comprehensible input. However, they really may not know how to keep comprehensible input flowing in way that is compelling to students over long periods of time.Or, sometimes they have dabbled in teaching with comprehensible input and tend to go too fast or tend to use CI to to cover content and/or teach grammar. This teacher is NOT comfortable yet at getting up in front of experienced TCI teachers and feels self-conscious and a tad insecure. It's a very solid and comprehensive intro to using CI. Due to room size and group size effectiveness, this is capped at 40 attendees. This session runs Thursday only, the entire time before lunch and about an hour after.
Teaching From The Heart / FLES: Laurie Clarcq
Originally from Rochester, N.Y. and he has traveled the globe as a teacher and a learner. Did you know she started off as an elementary teacher? Her classrooms have always reflected her love for language, learning and laughter. The students are, by far, her favorite part of teaching, but she has a special passion for exploring ways to connect students with the curriculum, and teachers with their students. Laurie has been a presenter, consultant and trainer on a local, state, national and international level. Her recent work in Australia, France and Canada has successfully introduced the skills of Comprehensible Input-based teaching to teachers in other areas of the world. A long-time blogger and contributor to written publications on and off-line, her work can be found on her two websites (www.heartsforteaching.com and www.embeddedreading.com). Most important to Laurie is the message that we are human beings teaching other human beings. It is the heart, imagination and spirit that we honor in the classroom, and in life. It is our ability to develop confidence, curiosity and insight in our students that will change the world. It is our ability to appreciate what we each offer our students and each other that will strengthen and honor the profession.
