The purpose of this workshop is to help people get to the ACTFL recommendation that 90% of all instruction is spent delivering 100% comprehensible input. Once again, we are aiming to offer a conference style workshop this year in which you can choose which presentations you will attend. It is very important that you choose according to your ability/comfort level in delivering CI. If you are used to staying in 100% comprehensible input for 75-90% of all instruction time, you could consider yourself a “knight” or “master.” If you still lack confidence in your ability to deliver compelling CI for long periods of time or you are self-conscious and wonder if you are doing it correctly, we would encourage you to work with the “initiate” classes even if you have attended multiple workshops.
TCI Initiate: This teacher has heard about ACTFL's recommendation that 90% of all instruction be comprehensible input and is aware that languages are acquired and not learned via repetitive comprehensible input. This teacher, however, really doesn't know how to keep comprehensible input flowing in way that is compelling to students over long periods of time.
TCI Padawan: This teacher has dabbled in teaching with comprehensible input. They, however, tend to go too fast and attempt to use comprehensible input for ulterior motives - to cover content and/or teach grammar. This teacher is NOT comfortable yet at getting up in front of experienced TCI teachers and feels self-conscious and a tad insecure. This teacher needs more ideas and strategies for delivering CI.
TCI Knight: This teacher is versatile and experienced in delivering CI. From being able to start with 3 structures, a picture, or a compelling video, this teacher can skillfully create a situation where students are more interested in what is being said than in learning Spanish. This teacher needs the input/critique of others on their practice. This teacher also is ready for strategies and techniques for teaching upper levels such as embedded readings, backwards planning etc. The Knight is mostly confident in his/her skills and will practice in front of other practitioners quite readily.
TCI Master: This teacher has been teaching with CI for nearly a decade, diligently attending conferences, engaging in peer coaching and practicing in front of peers and getting their input. This teacher has areas that he or she may need improvement/practice. Areas may include how to use CI with units as well as standards based assessments and instruction, etc. This teacher may also need help with reading strategies and how to effectively use readers as a form of CI. This teacher is highly confident in his/her skills and eager to practice in front of even seasoned practitioners in order to improve skills even more.
